Witness to War: Saturday June 30, 1917

Private Raymond Duval, MM, was a soldier of the 14th Battalion (Royal Montreal Regiment) CEF who served overseas during the last two years of the First World War. He participated in some of the fiercest fighting seen by Canadians during the war and was decorated for bravery at Passchendaele. Determined to preserve his memories of the First World War, he maintained a daily record of his experiences. Here is what he wrote precisely 100 years ago today:

Saturday June 30, 1917: Slept all day and wkg party at night again. Fritz bothered us with his star shells quite a bit and had to hold several times managed to shave today which made me feel better also managed to heat some water and make some time to write letter No 24 to my little girl today and received four from her which made me feel happy gee but I’m glad the folks can’t see us here. Its no joke.
