SOLVING DOCK WORKER TROUBLES IN 1915

Monday, March 22, 1915

In billets, Rue du Quesne

The Battalion War Diarist wrote for this day: “No work. Battn. resting.” [1]

THIS DAY IN RMR HISTORY: “A most ingenious way out of the docker troubles in Liverpool has been found.  Two thousand union dockers are to be enlisted as the First Dock Battalion of the Liverpool Regiment for home service.  They will wear khaki overalls, and will be under command of the Earl of Derby.  The Government guarantees a minimum wage of 35 shillings a week.  Both employers and employees have agreed to the scheme, which places the loading and unloading of war supplies directly under the control of the War Office.  Soldiers cannot strike when asked to work overtime.  The delay in forwarding military stores has very seriously affected the efficiency of the British army in France.”[2]
