The keeping of personal diaries was not encouraged as concerns regarding references to operational details that might prove of value to the enemy should the diaries fall into enemy hands. Forbidden information included references to locations, numbers of troops, criticism of superiors etc.
However, many soldiers kept diaries which were used as the basis for future books and remembrances regarding their experiences in the war.
