GERMAN ULTIMATUM TO BELGIUM

02 August 1914 – The German Minister to Brussels presented an ultimatum demanding Belgium’s agreement to a German advance against France through Belgian territory.  The Belgians were adamantly against such German plans which would break their 1839 treaty agreement.  Belgium asked for British and French assistance.
