Private Raymond Duval, MM, was a soldier of the 14th Battalion (Royal Montreal Regiment) CEF who served overseas during the last two years of the First World War. He participated in some of the fiercest fighting seen by Canadians during the war and was decorated for bravery at Passchendaele. Determined to preserve his memories of the First World War, he maintained a daily record of his experiences. Here is what he wrote precisely 100 years ago today:
Tuesday July 24, 1917: Six months today since I got married and I long to go back to her who is my wife Bathing parade in aft. But did not go Got a tub and had a bath with Charlie instead Brought some grub from Canteen for supper Wrote letter No 32 to my little girl. Rec’d No 29.30.31 from Clare and one from Dad. John R and Aunt Frank.
