THIS DAY IN RMR HISTORY – 19 August 1914 – Although the Canadian Government’s initial offer, made at the beginning of the month, to send troops to the aid of Great Britain contemplated sending one division comprising approximately 22,500 – 23,000 troops, volunteers for active service appeared in such great numbers that the initial target was very quickly exceeded. By August 18th reports indicated that more than 25,000 men would mobilize and that number would be far exceeded in the days to come.
