{"id":9645,"date":"2014-10-09T06:00:04","date_gmt":"2014-10-09T10:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/?p=9645"},"modified":"2014-10-09T06:00:04","modified_gmt":"2014-10-09T10:00:04","slug":"rmr-en-route-to-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rmrmuseum.com\/fr\/rmr-en-route-to-england\/","title":{"rendered":"RMR EN ROUTE TO ENGLAND"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/09-Oct-14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9565\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/09-Oct-14-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"09 Oct 14\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" \/><\/a>THIS DAY IN RMR HISTORY, 09 October 1914 &#8211; Conditions aboard the troop ships of the convoy were less than ideal.\u00a0 While officers enjoyed cabin class accommodation and service above deck, the troops endured cramped and stuffy conditions below decks.\u00a0 As the duration of the voyage became longer, conditions became more uncomfortable.\u00a0 Supplies started to run out, the few available pass times became boring and nerves became tense and frictions arose.\u00a0 One such incident involving the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion is recounted in a story of the 16<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion, Canadian Scottish: &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 \u201c\u2026 below decks tensions were rising between the men of the 16<sup>th<\/sup> and the 14<sup>th<\/sup> battalions. Although part of the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Brigade, the 14<sup>th<\/sup> was the only one of its four battalions not to have Highland origins.\u00a0 When some of its troops disputed nineteen-year-old piper Jimmie Richardson\u2019s pipe practice, the news of this assault on their Highland pride raced through the companies.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9646\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/09-Oct-14_B.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9646 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/09-Oct-14_B-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"09 Oct 14_B\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Piper Jimmie Richardson\u2019s bagpipes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The slender five-foot-seven Richardson had joined the battalion on September 22 at Valcartier.\u00a0 His only linkage to one of the four units was a six-month stint with the Seaforth Cadet unit in Chilliwack where his parents had settled after emigrating from Bell\u2019s Hill, in Scotland, so that his father could take the position of the town\u2019s police chief.\u00a0 An amiable lad, Richardson was popular with all the men regardless of which tartan they wore, and everyone vowed that this slight must not go unavenged.\u00a0 A plan of action was quickly agreed; the complete pipe band hurriedly assembled and was escorted by the entire battalion through the ship to where the 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u2019s men were quartered.\u00a0 As the 16<sup>th<\/sup> stood guard, the \u201cpipers played to their hearts\u2019 contents\u201d with the 14<sup>th<\/sup> warily and wisely choosing to offer no complaint.\u00a0 Esprit de corps was indeed being born.\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Piper Jimmie Richardson\u2019s bagpipes are now on permanent display in\u00a0the B.C.
