\"2014_royalMontrealRegiment.jsf\"<\/a>Westmount, QC – 16 September 2014: \u00a0In a dignified ceremony held in the Officers’ Mess of The Royal Montreal Regiment, Mr. Guy Morrissette, Manager of Retail Business for Canada Post, formally presented the Regiment with a commemorative envelope<\/a> honouring the RMR’s century of service to Canada. \u00a0The envelope\u00a0emphasizes the bilingual heritage of the Regiment, and fittingly the RMR’s first francophone CO, LCol (ret’d) Jacques Girardin, CD was on hand to assist with the unveiling. \u00a0Mr. Morissette addressed the gathering as follows:<\/p>\n

“Tonight, we recognize a milestone in the history of one of Canada\u2019s great regiments. It is my pleasure to unveil Canada Post\u2019s commemorative envelope, celebrating The Royal Montreal Regiment\u2019s 100th anniversary. \u00a0\u00c0 l\u2019occasion du centenaire du Royal Montreal Regiment, nous c\u00e9l\u00e9brons par cette enveloppe les origines de ce r\u00e9giment et les services qu\u2019il a rendus.<\/em><\/p>\n

Notre programme d\u2019enveloppes comm\u00e9moratives nous permet de raconter l\u2019histoire d\u2019institutions locales admir\u00e9es et respect\u00e9es. \u00a0Le Royal Montreal Regiment est l\u2019une de ces institutions. Le RMR a des racines profondes dans cette communaut\u00e9.<\/em><\/p>\n

One hundred years ago, right here in Westmount, three militia units merged to create the Royal Montreal Regiment. These militias were separated by language\u2026 Two spoke English\u2026 Une des trois unit\u00e9s \u00e9tait francophone. \u00a0Les membres du r\u00e9giment ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 ensemble un r\u00e9giment bilingue \u2013 ce qui \u00e9tait une id\u00e9e assez r\u00e9volutionnaire \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque. The merger created a bilingual regiment, which proved to be a tremendous success.<\/em><\/p>\n

Featuring archival photographs, this envelope offers evidence of that success and a glimpse into the earliest years of the Regiment. \u00a0One photo from 1914 depicts members of the regiment formed up for inspection just steps from where we are tonight. \u00a0Not long after, the Regiment departed for Europe and World War I.<\/em><\/p>\n

There, the regiment sharpened its skills in England and fought bravely in France where many members made the ultimate sacrifice. \u00a0The stamp image on the envelope pays tribute to that sacrifice.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sur cette photo, un soldat s\u2019incline devant le monument\u2026et aujourd\u2019hui, nous nous inclinons aussi. \u00a0Just as the stamp shows a soldier bowing respectfully at the memorial\u2026we too pay our respects to the men and women of the Regiment who have served throughout its 100 year history.<\/em><\/p>\n

We recognize those who served in the world wars, in Korea and throughout the world on Peacekeeping missions. \u00a0We thank those who served in Afghanistan. \u00a0And we remember the pride and relief we felt when members of the regiment helped people in the aftermath of the 1998 Ice Storm and during the 2011 floods in the Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nous nous souvenons de ceux qui ont servi en Cor\u00e9e, dans l\u2019ancienne Yougoslavie, \u00e0 Chypre et en Afghanistan pendant les conflits. Et nous remercions le R\u00e9giment qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019un grand secours pendant la crise du verglas de 1998 et les inondations de 2011 en Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie.<\/em><\/p>\n

Cette enveloppe est notre fa\u00e7on de vous rendre hommage, \u00e0 vous, les membres du Royal Montreal Regiment. \u00a0With this envelope, we express our thanks to the Regiment for a century of service and sacrifice.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Commanding Officer of the RMR, LCol Paul Langlais, MSC, CD, ADC<\/a>, thanked Mr. Morissette and Canada Post on behalf of all members of the Regimental Family and together they formally unveiled the envelope to the general public for the first time.<\/p>\n

The Royal Montreal Regiment commemorative envelope was designed by Katie Deering of Canada Post, and 8,000 envelopes were printed by Lowe-Martin Group. The envelope measures 170 mm by 115 mm. The envelope\u2019s image was taken during a training exercise in England (1915).<\/p>\n
