{"id":7905,"date":"2014-08-06T06:15:29","date_gmt":"2014-08-06T10:15:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/?p=7905"},"modified":"2014-08-06T06:15:29","modified_gmt":"2014-08-06T10:15:29","slug":"rmr-mobilizes-for-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rmrmuseum.com\/fr\/rmr-mobilizes-for-war\/","title":{"rendered":"RMR MOBILIZES FOR WAR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/06-Aug-14.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7875 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/06-Aug-14-300x253.jpg\" alt=\"06 Aug 14\" width=\"300\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a>THIS DAY IN RMR HISTORY, 06 August 1914 &#8211; On this date the Minister of Militia had the Adjutant-General send a night lettergram to 226 unit commanders of the Canadian Militia instructing the units \u201cto prepare and forward direct to Militia Headquarters not later than 12 August \u2018descriptive rolls\u2019 of volunteers, between the ages of 18 and 45, who could meet the prescribed physical standards.\u201d[1]<\/p>\n<p>On August 6<sup>th<\/sup> 1914 each of the three founding regiments, the Guards, the Vics, and the Carabiniers, started active recruiting in their own armouries.<\/p>\n<p>The new battalion was to be commanded by Lieut.-Colonel F. S. Meighen, who had risen to command the 1<sup>st<\/sup> Battalion, 5<sup>th<\/sup> Regiment Royal Highlanders of Canada in 1906, and had later transferred to, and served with, the 1<sup>st<\/sup> Regiment, Canadian Grenadier Guards.\u00a0 The post of Second-in Command of the new Regiment was awarded to Lieut.-Col. W.W. Burland, Commanding Officer of the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Regiment, Victoria Rifles of Canada, and Lieut. A.P. Holt, of the Grenadier Guards, was appointed Battalion Adjutant.\u00a0 Under the organization arrangements recruiting of Nos. 1, 2 and 3 Companies of the Regiment was carried on by the Grenadier Guards; Nos. 4, 5 and 6 Companies were recruited by the Victoria Rifles; and Nos. 7 and 8 Companies were raised by the Carabiniers de Mont Royal.[2]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<pre>[1] The Montreal Daily Mail, Thursday, August 6, 1914, pg. 1<\/pre>\n<pre>[2]\u00a0 Nicholson, Col.
