They named each of twenty six of their transit buses after the 26 men killed in WWI.\u00a0 Each bus carries the name outside with a sign inside telling about the soldier.\u00a0\u00a0 One of those buses is named after Pte. George Edward Biggs #26058, an original of the 14th Bn., C.E.F.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Purfleet-bus_1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11928 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Purfleet-bus_1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Purfleet bus_1\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Biggs\u00a0<span class=\"TextRun SCX217297677\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCX217297677\">married Daisy Constance of Anglo cottages, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCX217297677\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\"><span class=\"SpellingError SCX217297677\">Purfleet<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCX217297677\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCX217297677\">,\u00a0 at<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCX217297677\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\"><span class=\"SpellingError SCX217297677\">Rainham<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCX217297677\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCX217297677\"> in 1907, then in 1910 they emigrated to Canada.\u00a0 He enlisted with the RMR on 22 Sept 1914 in <\/span><span class=\"SpellingError SCX217297677\">Valcartier<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCX217297677\">, Quebec just <strong>p<a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/life-onboard-ship-sure-beats-valcartier\/\" target=\"_blank\">rior to the Regiment setting sail<\/a><\/strong> for the UK.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCX217297677\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As the official &#8220;circumstances of death&#8221; document (below) indicates, Biggs was a bomber and was killed during an attack at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/final-gasps-battle-of-festubert-1915\/\" target=\"_blank\">Battle of Festubert<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in 1915, which is one of the RMR&#8217;s 26 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\">battle honours<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Private George Edward Biggs\u00a0has no known grave, one of the many RMR&#8217;s listed as &#8220;missing&#8221;, and as such is commemorated on the V<span class=\"TextRun SCX124128004\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\"><span class=\"SpellingError SCX124128004\">imy<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCX124128004\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCX124128004\"> Memorial, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCX124128004\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\"><span class=\"SpellingError SCX124128004\">Vimy<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCX124128004\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCX124128004\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCX124128004\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\"><span class=\"SpellingError SCX124128004\">Departement<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCX124128004\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCX124128004\"> du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.<\/span><\/span> The RMR <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/centennial\/nijmegan-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">sent a contingent<\/a><\/strong> to visit the memorial as part of their centennial activities in the summer of 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Biggs_Circustances-of-death.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11927 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Biggs_Circustances-of-death-1024x527.jpg\" alt=\"Biggs_Circumstances of death\" width=\"670\" height=\"345\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Westmount, Quebec &#8211; 19 October 2015:\u00a0The Town of Purfleet, Essex, England has commemorated its native sons who died in the First World War.
