His best-known cartoon character is \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Bill_(comics)\">Old Bill<\/a>.\u2019\u00a0 Bill and his pals Bert and Alf featured in Bairnsfather&#8217;s weekly \u2018<em>Fragments from France\u2019<\/em> cartoons published weekly in \u2018The Bystander\u2019 magazine during the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_World_War\">First World War<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11369\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 245px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/10-June-15_B.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11369\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/10-June-15_B-245x300.png\" alt=\"Old Bill\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">\u201cWell, if you knows of a better \u2018ole, go to it.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1914 he [Bairnsfather] joined the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Warwickshire_Fusiliers\">Royal Warwickshire Regiment<\/a> as a\u00a0second lieutenant and served with a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Machine_gun\">machine gun<\/a> unit in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\">France<\/a> until 1915, when he was hospitalised with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shell_shock\">shellshock<\/a> and hearing damage sustained during the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Battle_of_Ypres\">Second Battle of Ypres<\/a>. Posted to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/34th_Division_(United_Kingdom)\">34th Division<\/a> headquarters on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salisbury_Plain\">Salisbury Plain<\/a>, he developed his humorous series for the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bystander_(magazine)\"><em>Bystander<\/em><\/a> about life in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trench_warfare\">trenches<\/a>, featuring &#8220;Old Bill&#8221;, a curmudgeonly soldier with trademark <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walrus_moustache\">walrus moustache<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Balaclava_(clothing)\">balaclava<\/a>. The best remembered of these shows Bill with another trooper in a muddy shell hole with shells whizzing all around. The other trooper is grumbling and Bill advises:<\/p>\n<p>Many of his cartoons from this period were collected in <em>Fragments From France<\/em> (1914) and the autobiographical <em>Bullets &amp; Billets<\/em> (1916).\u00a0\u00a0 Despite the immense popularity with the troops and massive sales increase for the <em>Bystander<\/em>, initially there were objections to the &#8220;vulgar caricature&#8221;. Nevertheless, their success in raising morale led to Bairnsfather&#8217;s promotion and receipt of a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_Office\">War Office<\/a> appointment to draw similar cartoons for other <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allies_of_World_War_I\">Allies<\/a> forces.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/10-June-15_C.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11370\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/10-June-15_C-276x300.png\" alt=\"Old Bill\" width=\"237\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/10-June-15_D.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11371\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/10-June-15_D-218x300.png\" alt=\"Old Bill\" width=\"207\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOld Bill<\/strong> was depicted as an elderly, pipe-smoking British &#8220;tommy&#8221; with a walrus moustache. The character achieved a great deal of popularity during <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_I\">World War I<\/a> where it was considered a major morale booster for the British troops. Old Bill and his younger troop-mate little Alphie were private infantrymen in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Expeditionary_Force_(World_War_I)\">British Expeditionary Force<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many claims have been put forth as being the model for \u2018Old Bill\u2019 but the most likely appears to be Thomas Henry Rafferty, a lance corporal from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Birmingham\">Birmingham<\/a> in Bairnsfather&#8217;s regiment, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Warwickshire_Regiment\">Royal Warwickshires<\/a>, who was killed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Battle_of_Ypres\">same action<\/a> that invalided Bairnsfather in April 1915.
