{"id":11202,"date":"2015-05-08T05:00:17","date_gmt":"2015-05-08T09:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/?p=11202"},"modified":"2015-05-08T05:00:17","modified_gmt":"2015-05-08T09:00:17","slug":"where-did-the-rmr-come-from","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rmrmuseum.com\/fr\/where-did-the-rmr-come-from\/","title":{"rendered":"Where Did The RMR Come From?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i>Saturday, May 8, 1915<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>In billets, Bailleul (Nouveau Monde)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Battalion War Diarist wrote for this day: <em>\u201cNew men drafted to Companies, several exchanges of men arranged with Ontario battalions and other battalions of 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Brigade\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/soldiers-vote-bill-passes-in-1915\/#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">THIS DAY IN RMR HISTORY:\u00a0This exchange of men between battalions was occasioned by the fact noted in the previous day\u2019s diary &#8211; <em>\u201cLarge draft of about 276 men arrived from England, mostly men from Toronto and Ontario points.\u00a0 It was discovered that men from Montreal who had come to England with 23<sup>rd<\/sup> Bn. C.E.F., and who were mostly from home units of the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Bn. had been sent to Ontario units in France.\u00a0 Much resentment felt by all ranks at this.\u00a0 Draft sent 14<sup>th<\/sup> Bn. was however, of good quality.\u201d\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although the First Canadian Division, C.E.F. had been mobilized in August and September 1914, and sailed for England in October, it was on this date that an article detailing its composition appeared in the national press. The article published May 8<sup>th<\/sup>, 1915 in <em>The Globe<\/em>, Toronto under the following title, gave a listing of all the infantry battalions that made up the First Canadian Division.\u00a0 Each battalion was listed by brigade, with the name of its commanding officer, and then the names of the various units which had contributed men to the formation of the twelve battalions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/08-May-15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11203\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/08-May-15-300x60.png\" alt=\"08 May 15\" width=\"300\" height=\"60\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although it would seem rather late in the day to publish a detailed listing of the many\u00a0 units making up the various infantry battalions of the First Canadian Division, such news had perhaps not been publicly disclosed before in such a detailed format.\u00a0 Without repeating the details for all sixteen battalions of the Division, suffice it to say that the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion was correctly shown as part of the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Infantry Brigade, commanded by Colonel R.E.W. Turner, V.C., D.S.O., R.O.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Globe\u2019s listing for the 14<sup>th <\/sup>Battalion (RMR) shows it was commanded by Lt.-Col. F.S. Meighen, (1<sup>st<\/sup> Regiment), and showed the 14<sup>th <\/sup>\u00a0(RMR) was composed of detachments of troops from the following regiments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c14<sup>th<\/sup> King\u2019s Canadian Hussars;<\/li>\n<li>1<sup>st<\/sup> Regiment (Canadian Grenadier Guards);<\/li>\n<li>3<sup>rd<\/sup> Regiment (Victoria Rifles of Canada);<\/li>\n<li>63<sup>rd<\/sup> Regiment (Halifax Rifles);<\/li>\n<li>65<sup>th<\/sup> Carabiniers (Mont Royal);<\/li>\n<li>66<sup>th<\/sup> Regiment;<\/li>\n<li>69<sup>th<\/sup> Annapolis Regiment;<\/li>\n<li>75<sup>th<\/sup> Lunenburgh Regiment;<\/li>\n<li>76<sup>th<\/sup> Colchester and Hants Rifles;\u00a0 and the<\/li>\n<li>81<sup>st<\/sup> Regiment.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[4]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This list agrees with the list recorded in Col. A.F.
