{"id":11167,"date":"2015-04-22T10:28:39","date_gmt":"2015-04-22T14:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/?p=11167"},"modified":"2015-04-22T10:28:39","modified_gmt":"2015-04-22T14:28:39","slug":"11167-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rmrmuseum.com\/fr\/11167-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Poem for Richard Steacie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Westmount, QC &#8211; 22 April 2015: On the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the 2nd Battle of Ypres, we are pleased to release a poem that has been written in honour of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/?s=steacie\" target=\"_blank\">Captain Richard Steacie<\/a>, the first RMR officer killed in action &#8211; precisely 100 years ago today. \u00a0He was buried in an unmarked grave for 98 years, his remains only being correctly identified in the past few years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11168\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 230px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Pam-Steacie.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11168\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Pam-Steacie-300x237.png\" alt=\"Pam Steacie\" width=\"230\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Pam Steacie visiting her great-grandfather&#8217;s grave in 2013<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pam Steacie, his great-granddaughter, has visited his grave that is now properly marked with his name, and she reports that <em>&#8220;Four of my French friends decided to visit the grave in Belgium; they were very moved by the story of his life and death and the identification of his grave. \u00a0They also feel very grateful. They feel that it is thanks in part to Captain Richard Steacie and those who fought with him, that they (my friends) are still French, and not German.<\/em><\/p>\n<div><em>The cousin of one of my friends is a poet,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/spafenlorraine.unblog.fr\/2012\/11\/15\/nicole-bardin-laporte\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nicole Bardin-Laporte<\/a>, and was moved by the story to write a poem in Captain Richard Steacie&#8217;s memory! \u00a0It will be published in her next book of poetry (this will be her 4th).&#8221;<\/em><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>SOUVENEZ-VOUS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A la m\u00e9moire du Capitaine Richard Steacie<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Souvenez-vous qu\u2019un jour il a quitt\u00e9 sa terre<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Pour voler au secours de pays en mis\u00e8re,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A ces terroirs en guerre il a pr\u00eat\u00e9 son bras,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Apport\u00e9 sa vaillance et son c\u0153ur au combat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Il est venu de loin, a franchi l\u2019oc\u00e9an<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Et puis dans la bataille a rejoint les g\u00e9ants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Souvenez-vous aussi qu\u2019il repose \u00e0 jamais<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Bien au-del\u00e0 des mers, sous le sol d\u00e9sormais,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Ayant perdu son nom, sans \u00eatre un apatride,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Laissant au c\u0153ur des siens de longs sillons arides.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Et sans identit\u00e9, en soldat inconnu,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Presqu\u2019un si\u00e8cle est rest\u00e9, sous ce monument nu,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Vierge d\u2019une inscription le reliant encore<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Par un maillon d\u2019amour \u00e0 ceux, qui, au-dehors,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">L\u2019ont tant cherch\u00e9 en vain et n\u2019ont jamais faibli,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Unissant leurs efforts pour qu\u2019ainsi, anobli,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Son souvenir enfin soit alors honor\u00e9<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Devant la s\u00e9pulture o\u00f9 son nom est grav\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Souvenez-vous encor, le miracle est venu<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Et Richard, l\u2019Irlandais, un jour fut reconnu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Sous le ciel canadien, il a fond\u00e9 famille,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A b\u00e2ti sa maison, l\u00e0-bas sous la charmille,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Pr\u00e8s d\u2019Ypres sous la terre, il est venu dormir,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Voil\u00e0 cent ans d\u00e9j\u00e0, il faut vous souvenir\u2026\u00a0!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">REMEMBER\u00a0!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Remember that one day he left his homeland<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">To the people abroad, he came to give a hand<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And a valiant soldier in such a cruel war,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Near Ypres, in Belgium, he lies for evermore\u00a0!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>NB\u00a0: Le capitaine Richard Steacie repose \u00e0 Poelkappelle, \u00e0 10km d\u2019Ypres.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spafenlorraine.unblog.fr\/2012\/11\/15\/nicole-bardin-laporte\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nicole Bardin-Laporte<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Steacie family has been very generous with the RMR, donating Captain Steacie\u2019s sword (which is now carried on parade by the CO to remind all leaders within the Regiment to <em>\u2018Lead from the Front\u2019<\/em>), as well as some scrapbooks maintained by Captain Steacie\u2019s son Edgar, which has provided valuable historical information on the formation of the Regiment, insight into the social history of the period, as well as examples of such things as the RMR\u2019s first Christmas cards ever issued.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lest We Forget.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Westmount, QC &#8211;
