Chandler died of cerebro-spinal meningitis.\u201d [1]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">THIS DAY IN RMR HISTORY:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cCerebro-spinal meningitis, a few cases of which had occurred previously, increased at this time and threatened for a while to hold the Division in England.\u00a0 Private J.K. Chandler, of the 14<sup>th<\/sup>, developed the disease on January 19<sup>th<\/sup> and died in hospital four days later.\u00a0 Corp. S.A. Randall died on January 30<sup>th<\/sup>[sic].\u00a0 Meanwhile the huts where these soldiers had lived were rigidly quarantined, as were all affected huts throughout the Division.\u00a0 Altogether 39 cases occurred in the Contingent between December 13<sup>th<\/sup> and February 10<sup>th<\/sup>, 28 of these proving fatal.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>No. 25935, PRIVATE JOHN KELLMAN CHANDLER:\u00a0<\/strong>Private John Kellman Chandler, was born in Barbados, British West Indies on Sept 9<sup>th<\/sup>, 1889, the son of John K. and Mary Ida Chandler of Hastings, Christ Church, Barbados. As a young man he emigrated to Canada where he worked as a clerk in Montreal, and resided on Mansfield Street.\u00a0 While there he served for a year with the Victoria Rifles of Canada, before enlisting on Sept 21<sup>st<\/sup>, 1914 for overseas service.\u00a0 While training with the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion at Salisbury he contracted cerebro-spinal meningitis and died on January 23<sup>rd<\/sup> 1914, at the age of 25.\u00a0 He was buried at Bulford Church Cemetery, along with 70 other First World War burials, many of whom were from Bulford Camp.<\/p>\n<pre>[1]\u00a0\u00a0 <em>War Diary, 14<sup>th<\/sup> Canadian Battalion, The Royal Montreal Regiment<\/em>, Jan 23, 1915.\u00a0 Library and Archives Canada, Ottawa,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/data2.collectionscanada.ca\/e\/e044\/e001089686.jpg\">http:\/\/data2.collectionscanada.ca\/e\/e044\/e001089686.jpg<\/a><\/pre>\n<pre>[2]\u00a0\u00a0 R.C.
