The turnout was excellent, with about 100 people tucking into the meal provided by the <\/span><span id=\"E48\">Canadian Forces\u2019 <\/span><span id=\"E49\">Longue Pointe garrison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E51\"><span id=\"E52\">The dinner, along with the preceding sports, was presided over by the RMR\u2019s commanding officer, <\/span><span id=\"E54\">LCol<\/span><span id=\"E56\"> Paul <\/span><span id=\"E58\">Langlais<\/span><span id=\"E60\">, and the newly appointed regimental sergeant-major, MWO DR Cochrane. <\/span><span id=\"E61\">Maj<\/span><span id=\"E62\">or<\/span><span id=\"E63\"> George <\/span><span id=\"E65\">Siket<\/span><span id=\"E67\">, the deputy commanding officer, was also present.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-8\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E11\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_10439\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Pugil3.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10439 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Pugil3-300x254.png\" alt=\"Pugil3\" width=\"300\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Prep for Battle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"E68\"><span id=\"E69\">After signing the <\/span><span id=\"E72\">paysheet<\/span><span id=\"E74\">, the troops changed into sports gear and spent most of the morning <\/span><span id=\"E75\">participating <\/span><span id=\"E76\">in a vastly popular <\/span><span id=\"E78\">pugil<\/span><span id=\"E80\"> stick fighting competition. Designed to instill an offensive spirit, the competition featured two people battering each other with thickly padded <\/span><span id=\"E82\">pugil<\/span><span id=\"E84\"> sticks. Each person was amply protected with a football helmet, hockey gloves and body padding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E86\"><span id=\"E87\">The action was fast and furious, with many participants earning roars of approval from the<\/span><span id=\"E88\">ir peers <\/span><span id=\"E89\">through their fighting spirit. The referee was <\/span><span id=\"E91\">MCpl<\/span><span id=\"E93\"> Elias <\/span><span id=\"E95\">Aoun<\/span><span id=\"E97\">, a qualified close quarter combat instructor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E99\"><span id=\"E100\">When the dust had settled, the overall victor was Cpl Robert <\/span><span id=\"E102\">Duma<\/span><span id=\"E104\">. Pte Chris Randall was second.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E106\"><span id=\"E107\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tug-of-War_Officers.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10447 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tug-of-War_Officers-150x150.png\" alt=\"Tug of War_Officers\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Off to the side, along the armoury\u2019s north wall, <\/span><span id=\"E108\">teams of soldiers hauled and sweated in various tug of war competitions. Nearby, some hard-fought arm wrestling bouts attracted attention. The winner was Cpl Antoine <\/span><span id=\"E110\">Legault<\/span><span id=\"E112\">, with Sgt <\/span><span id=\"E114\">Mazen<\/span><span id=\"E116\"> El-<\/span><span id=\"E118\">Khoury<\/span><span id=\"E120\"> finishing second.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-9\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E11\">\n<p id=\"E122\"><span id=\"E123\">While the junior ranks were changing into service dress, complete with undress medal ribbons, the officers and senior non-commissioned members <\/span><span id=\"E125\">scurried <\/span><span id=\"E126\">a<\/span><span id=\"E127\">round<\/span><span id=\"E128\"> the parade square<\/span><span id=\"E129\">, laying the tables with <\/span><span id=\"E130\">napkins, <\/span><span id=\"E131\">buns, plastic glasses, forks and knives. When all was ready, the RMR formed up in three ranks for a short parade and several presentations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E133\"><span id=\"E134\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/CD_Crawford.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10425 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/CD_Crawford-150x150.png\" alt=\"CD_Crawford\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>CWO William Crawford, the 27<\/span><span id=\"E135\">th<\/span><span id=\"E136\"> RSM of the RMR who <\/span><span id=\"E137\">relinquished the position <\/span><span id=\"E138\">in November, at the Remembrance Day parade, <\/span><span id=\"E139\">was presented with the second clasp to his Canadian Forces Decoration<\/span><span id=\"E140\"> by <\/span><span id=\"E142\">LCol<\/span><span id=\"E144\"> <\/span><span id=\"E146\">Langlais<\/span><span id=\"E148\">. The CD is awarded for 12 years of service and good conduct. Some say, tongue in cheek, that it <\/span><span id=\"E149\">really <\/span><span id=\"E150\">means 12 years of undetected crime. Clasps are awarded for each subsequent decade of service. CWO Crawford has served 32 years so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E152\"><span id=\"E153\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Promotion-to-Corporal.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10434 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Promotion-to-Corporal-150x150.png\" alt=\"Promotion to Corporal\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The commanding officer then distributed f<\/span><span id=\"E154\">our eagerly awaited promotions<\/span><span id=\"E155\">.<\/span><span id=\"E156\"> JP <\/span><span id=\"E158\">Vallieres<\/span><span id=\"E160\">, Thomas Ritchie-Burger and <\/span><span id=\"E162\">Duy<\/span><span id=\"E164\"> <\/span><span id=\"E166\">Oum<\/span><span id=\"E168\"> all received <\/span><span id=\"E169\">the <\/span><span id=\"E170\">second stripe<\/span><span id=\"E171\"> which made them corporals. Connor McLeod was promoted to the rank of master corporal, which features a small maple leaf over two stripes.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-10\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E11\">\n<p id=\"E173\"><span id=\"E174\">Promotions are tangible <\/span><span id=\"E175\">evidence <\/span><span id=\"E176\">that the soldier has gained experience, is doing well in his job, has shown qualities of <\/span><span id=\"E177\">leadership and is trusted to do even better in the future. It also means more pay and increased responsibilities. For example, a master corporal may now command a second of ten or so soldiers and be responsible, in part, for their attendance, morale, training<\/span><span id=\"E179\"> and<\/span><span id=\"E180\"> administration<\/span><span id=\"E181\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E183\"><span id=\"E184\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/JRC.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10432 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/JRC-150x150.png\" alt=\"JRC\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Much later in the day, sounds of revelry and congratulation was heard from the Junior Ranks Mess as the four celebrated their promotions by ringing the bell and buying<\/span><span id=\"E185\">,<\/span><span id=\"E186\"> each <\/span><span id=\"E187\">in their turn, <\/span><span id=\"E188\">a round <\/span><span id=\"E189\">of drinks <\/span><span id=\"E190\">for their peers.<\/span><span id=\"E191\"> That is a very old tradition tha<\/span><span id=\"E192\">t goes back decades in the RMR and the army.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E194\"><span id=\"E195\">Finally, it was time to eat and <\/span><span id=\"E196\">the officers and senior non-commissioned officers served the soldiers with the dinner. <\/span><span id=\"E197\">Many wore a plastic apron and the white cook\u2019s hat normally seen in Canadian Forces<\/span><span id=\"E198\">\u2019<\/span><span id=\"E199\"> kitchen<\/span><span id=\"E200\">s<\/span><span id=\"E201\">. <\/span><span id=\"E202\">Serving the troops <\/span><span id=\"E203\">at this yearly event <\/span><span id=\"E204\">is a way <\/span><span id=\"E205\">for <\/span><span id=\"E206\">the <\/span><span id=\"E207\">unit <\/span><span id=\"E208\">leadership to thank the soldiers for their hard work, dedication and professionalism displayed over the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-11\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E11\">\n<p id=\"E210\"><span id=\"E211\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Waiters-briefing.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10448 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Waiters-briefing-150x150.png\" alt=\"Waiters briefing\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The Department of History and Heritage<\/span><span id=\"E212\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">, of the Canadian Forces,<\/span><span id=\"E213\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\"> explains the tradition<\/span><span id=\"E214\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\"> on its website<\/span><span id=\"E215\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">. \u201cBefore the introduction of mechanization and sophisticated systems of logistics in the 20th century, enlisted personnel occupied much of their time in <\/span><span id=\"E216\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">tedious routine. In an effort to boost morale, and to show general appreciation for junior ranks, officers took it upon themselves to organize celebrations for the enlisted ranks. One tradition that has been preserved over the ages has been the Christmas dinner. Officers and senior non-commissioned officers not only organize the dinner, but they also prepare and serve it to the junior ranks of their unit. When the dinner is over their task is not complete until they clean up<\/span><span id=\"E218\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">.\u201d<\/span><span id=\"E219\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E220\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman qowt-stl-apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E223-owchain-0\" data-ow-chain=\"orphan\"><span id=\"E224\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Good-food.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10429 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Good-food-150x150.png\" alt=\"Good food\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>DHH says that a<\/span><span id=\"E225\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">ll <\/span><span id=\"E226\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">this tradition <\/span><span id=\"E227\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">stem<\/span><span id=\"E228\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">s<\/span><span id=\"E229\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\"> from the ancient Roman custom of Saturnalia.<\/span><span id=\"E230\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\"> \u201c<\/span><span id=\"E231\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">The festival of Saturnalia honors Saturn and falls at the same time as Christmas, Hanukkah, Solstice and\/or Kwanzaa. Christmas decorations such as swathes, garlands, wreaths and tree ornaments began with the merriment of Saturnalia.<\/span><span id=\"E232\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman qowt-stl-apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E233-owchain-0\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\" data-ow-chain=\"orphan\">During the time of Saturnalia slaves and children got to be waited on for meals, lead the rituals, and participated in the revelry as if they were their parents\/masters. The parents\/masters jokingly played the part of children and slaves by waiting on them. The role reversal was symbolic as slaves were not really free to make decisions as free persons nor were children able to enter into contracts or make business deals. Role\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E233-owchain-1\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\" data-ow-chain=\"widow\">reversal was only for minor privileges.<\/span><span id=\"E234\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-12\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E11\">\n<p id=\"E237\"><span id=\"E238\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">DHH finishes by saying that \u201cs<\/span><span id=\"E239\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">pecific traditions during the Christmas season can vary amongst environments and units in the Canadian Forces, For example, in the navy, Christmas lights <\/span><span id=\"E240\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">and decorations have been used to decorate trees, streets, buildings and a ship\u2019s yardarms. In many cases there is an active competition to see who has the best decorations.<\/span><span id=\"E242\" class=\"qowt-font4-TimesNewRoman\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E244\"><span id=\"E245\">On the RMR\u2019s parade square, near <\/span><span id=\"E246\">one end of the head table, a three-foot table was set with an empty place setting, to symbolize the missing soldier. He symbolizes all the RMR soldiers who lost their lives in two world wars.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10426\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 150px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/CO-for-the-Day.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10426 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/CO-for-the-Day-150x150.png\" alt=\"CO for the Day\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">CO for the Day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"E248\"><span id=\"E249\">At the head table, another old Christmas <\/span><span id=\"E250\">military <\/span><span id=\"E251\">tradition was faithfully observed as <\/span><span id=\"E253\">LCol<\/span><span id=\"E255\"> <\/span><span id=\"E257\">Langlois<\/span><span id=\"E259\"> traded jobs with the youngest private in the RMR, <\/span><span id=\"E260\">Pte <\/span><span id=\"E261\">Christopher <\/span><span id=\"E263\">Marchand<\/span><span id=\"E265\">, 17. <\/span><span id=\"E266\">\u201cI\u2019m honoured but a little nervous,\u201d confided the Dawson College business management student.<\/span><span id=\"E267\"> <\/span><span id=\"E268\">Wearing the real CO\u2019s jacket, complete with <\/span><span id=\"E269\">his brand new <\/span><span id=\"E270\">rank insignia <\/span><span id=\"E271\">of a crown and star on each epaulette, plus <\/span><span id=\"E272\">medal ribbons, t<\/span><span id=\"E273\">he young man was now CO of the RMR for the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-13\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E11\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_10443\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 150px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/RSM-for-the-Day.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10443 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/RSM-for-the-Day-150x150.png\" alt=\"RSM for the Day\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">RSM for the Day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"E275\"><span id=\"E276\">Also sitting at the head table was Cpl Frank <\/span><span id=\"E278\">Laciak<\/span><span id=\"E280\">, 46, who was honoured by being appointed RSM for the day<\/span><span id=\"E281\">, complete with MWO Cochrane\u2019s jacket.<\/span><span id=\"E282\"> This <\/span><span id=\"E283\">newer <\/span><span id=\"E284\">tradition sees the oldest corporal trade his uniform jacket with the RSM. Cpl <\/span><span id=\"E286\">Laciak<\/span><span id=\"E288\">, a finance clerk, has been in the RMR for 25 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E290\"><span id=\"E291\">The very first Christmas dinner held by the RMR<\/span><span id=\"E293\"> <\/span><span id=\"E294\">was held exactly 100 years ago under very different circumstances than this year\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E296\"><span id=\"E297\">The RMR, which had been organized in August, 1914, <\/span><span id=\"E298\">as the 14<\/span><span id=\"E299\">th<\/span><span id=\"E300\"> Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, p<\/span><span id=\"E301\">art of the First Contingent of <\/span><span id=\"E302\">Canadian <\/span><span id=\"E303\">troops sent to fight in the First World War, was billeted in huts at <\/span><span id=\"E305\">Larkhill<\/span><span id=\"E307\">, in England. <\/span><span id=\"E308\">The weather was atrocious<\/span><span id=\"E309\">, <\/span><span id=\"E310\">with rain and mud making training <\/span><span id=\"E311\">and daily life <\/span><span id=\"E312\">a misery. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E314\"><span id=\"E315\">On Dec. 11, 1914, the <\/span><span id=\"E316\">Montreal Daily Mail<\/span><span id=\"E317\"> reported on page one that the troops would enjoy Christmas dinner, courtesy of the Canadian government.<\/span><span id=\"E318\"> The headline read, \u201cXmas Dinner For <\/span><span id=\"E319\">\/<\/span><span id=\"E320\"> Canadian Troops. Dominion Government will Provide Seasonable Cheer for Every Member of Force.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-14\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E11\">\n<p id=\"E322\"><span id=\"E323\">\u201cOttawa, Dec. 10.\u00a0 &#8211; The Government has decided to provide a Christmas dinner for every man on active service in Canada.\u00a0 This will include the men of the Second Contingent, and also those who are being recruited for future contingents and reinforcements.\u00a0\u00a0 There are now over 30,000 men on active service, besides the 3,000 on guard duty so that the Government will have at least 40,000 Christmas dinners to provide.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E324\" class=\"qowt-stl-apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E325\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E327\"><span id=\"E328\">Volume <\/span><span id=\"E330\">O<\/span><span id=\"E331\">ne of the regimental history, written by RC <\/span><span id=\"E333\">Fetherstonhaugh<\/span><span id=\"E335\">, described that first Christmas. \u201cMany officers and men were granted leave over one or another of the dates. Those remaining on duty decorated the huts, ordered parcels of special food and drink from London, organized sing-song hut parties, and endeavoured to forget for a few hours the constant rain, the all-pervading mud, and the endless digging and draining which the atrocious weather made necessary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E337-owchain-0\" data-ow-chain=\"orphan\"><span id=\"E338\">Two years later, the 14<\/span><span id=\"E339\">th<\/span><span id=\"E340\"> Battalion\u2019s Christmas dinner was held on Dec. 25, 191<\/span><span id=\"E341\">6<\/span><span id=\"E342\">. The unit<\/span><span id=\"E343\">, which in almost two years had fought in many battles, <\/span><span id=\"E344\">had been <\/span><span id=\"E345\">enjoying <\/span><span id=\"E346\">rest billets for three days, at <\/span><span id=\"E348\">Brauy<\/span><span id=\"E350\">, <\/span><span id=\"E351\">wrote <\/span><span id=\"E353\">Feth<\/span><span id=\"E354\">erstonhaugh<\/span><span id=\"E356\">. \u201cAt <\/span><span id=\"E358\">Bruay<\/span><span id=\"E360-owchain-0\" data-ow-chain=\"orphan\">, the Battalion passed Christmas and welcomed the new year. The men were comfortably billeted in houses and buildings of the town. Routine training was carried out on each day and on Christmas\u00a0<\/span>all who so desired it were given an opportunity to partake of holy Communion, or attend the celebration of Mass. No parades were held and the holiday was marked by a special dinner for the men, the bill of fare including a few unusual items such as port wine and cigars. In the evening, the officers held a memorable dinner in the principal local hotel. Canon Scott, one-time principal Protestant Chaplain of the Regiment, was the guest of honour.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-15\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E11\">\n<p id=\"E362\"><span id=\"E363\">In fact, the RMR was overseas for five consecutive Christmases <\/span><span id=\"E365\">during the first war <\/span><span id=\"E366\">and was lucky <\/span><span id=\"E367\">t<\/span><span id=\"E368\">o be out of the line for each one. The first one was held in England, the second in divisional reserve at <\/span><span id=\"E370\">Kortepyp<\/span><span id=\"E372\"> (1915), the third in rest billets at <\/span><span id=\"E374\">Bruay<\/span><span id=\"E376\"> (1916), <\/span><span id=\"E377\"> <\/span><span id=\"E378\">the fourth in div reserve at St Lawrence Camp (1917) and the final one<\/span><span id=\"E379\">, in 1918,<\/span><span id=\"E380\"> across the Rhine, in <\/span><span id=\"E382\">Unter<\/span><span id=\"E384\"> <\/span><span id=\"E386\">Eschbach<\/span><span id=\"E388\">,<\/span><span id=\"E389\"> <\/span><span id=\"E390\">in occupied Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E392\"><span id=\"E393\">That final dinner of the 14<\/span><span id=\"E394\">th<\/span><span id=\"E395\"> Battalion must have been extremely poignant for those present. They had survived the war when 1,192 RMR soldiers had not. Now they would live to return to Canada, home and loved ones. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E397-owchain-0\" data-ow-chain=\"orphan\"><span id=\"E399\">Fetherstonhaugh<\/span><span id=\"E401-owchain-0\" data-ow-chain=\"orphan\"> set the scene in his Volume One. \u201cSnow fell\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E401-owchain-1\" data-ow-chain=\"widow\">heavily during the night of Dec. 24, with the result that when reveille wakened the Royal <\/span><span id=\"E403\">Montrealers<\/span><span id=\"E405\"> on Christmas morning the scene bore all the marks of Canada. Turkeys, promised for dinner, failed to arrive, but the Battalions cooks produced a meal that all declared excellent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-16\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E11\">\n<p id=\"E407\"><span id=\"E408\">Number One and Four Companied dined together, he said, as did Headquarters and No. 2 Coy, but No. 3 Coy elected to eat by itself. \u201cBeer, rum, punch, dates, apples, figs and orange<\/span><span id=\"E409\">s<\/span><span id=\"E410\"> were supplied to the men for dessert, and the tables were waited on by the officers and Senior NCOs. Lieut.-Col. (Dick) Worrall <\/span><span id=\"E411\">visited <\/span><span id=\"E412\">each party and was everywhere received with cheers, the men being proud of the fact that he had left Canada in the ranks of the Battalion and had risen through devoted service to command. At each dinner, in acknowledgment of the greeting, he expressed deep satisfaction in commanding such a Regiment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E415\"><span id=\"E416\">Later that day, the Sergeants inaugurated their mess with a dinner that will \u201clive long in the memory of all privileged to attend. At <\/span><span id=\"E417\">8 <\/span><span id=\"E418\">o\u2019clock the officers dined in a hall about a mile from billets. <\/span><span id=\"E419\">Preparation for this event had been placed in the hands of Capt. J.E. McKenna, M.C., who achieved a great success.<\/span><span id=\"E420\">\u201d<\/span><span id=\"E421\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-17\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E11\">\n<p id=\"E423\"><span id=\"E424\">During dinner the Battalion band played, <\/span><span id=\"E426\">Fetherstonhaugh<\/span><span id=\"E428\"> <\/span><span id=\"E429\"> wrote, \u201cand from a tree, each guest received a gift bearing some relation to present behavior, or personal idiosyncrasies. The first toast was, of course, \u201cThe King,\u201d which all drank with traditional ceremony. Capt. McKenna then proposed, \u201cThe Commanding Officer,\u201d which evoked prolonged cheers. The third and last toast of the evening, \u201cAbsent Comrades,\u201d was proposed by Major C.B. Price, and honoured in impressive silence.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E431\"><span id=\"E432\">In view of the splendid and joyous celebrations held on Christmas, the laconic entry of the Battalion diary on Dec. 26<\/span><span id=\"E434\">th<\/span><span id=\"E435\">, \u201cno parades were held,\u201d provoke a smile, wrote <\/span><span id=\"E437\">Fetherstonhaugh<\/span><span id=\"E439\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E441-owchain-0\" data-ow-chain=\"orphan\"><span id=\"E442\">The tradition continued after the war, held in the RMR\u2019s splendid new armoury that opened Dec. 28, 1928. <\/span><span id=\"E443\">Twenty-five years after mobilizing for the first war, the RMR answered the call <\/span><span id=\"E444\">to arms <\/span><span id=\"E445\">for a second time in September, 1939. Three months later, the 1<\/span><span id=\"E446\">st<\/span><span id=\"E447\"> Battalion was in England, in <\/span><span id=\"E449\">Albuhera<\/span><span id=\"E451\"> Barracks, in Aldershot. <\/span><span id=\"E452-owchain-0\" data-ow-chain=\"orphan\">\u201cInvitations for officers and other ranks to share in Christmas festivities poured in from unknown<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-18\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E11\">\n<p id=\"E441-owchain-1\" data-ow-chain=\"widow\"><span id=\"E452-owchain-1\" data-ow-chain=\"widow\">friends in all parts of the British Isles and, through the acceptance of them, many lasting friendships with the people of Britain were formed. On Dec. 24, the Battalion paraded at 10:15 a.m. and attended divine service in St George\u2019s Church. \u201cSpecial dinners were served in all messes on Christmas; and on Boxing Day, parades were cancelled,\u201d wrote <\/span><span id=\"E454\">Fetherstonhaugh<\/span><span id=\"E456\"> in volume two of the RMR\u201ds official history.<\/span><span id=\"E457\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E459\"><span id=\"E460\">To sum up, it is almost certain that the RMR has held this traditional dinner every single year of its existence, for a total of 100 Christmas dinners in all. It is a chance for all ranks to celebrate a common holiday and <\/span><span id=\"E461\">slightly <\/span><span id=\"E462\">relax <\/span><span id=\"E463\">the rigid barriers of rank. <\/span><span id=\"E464\">A good meal coupled with a festive atmosphere makes the traditional occasion an event to remember.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E471\">\u00a0<a
