{"id":10301,"date":"2014-12-25T06:00:02","date_gmt":"2014-12-25T11:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/?p=10301"},"modified":"2014-12-25T06:00:02","modified_gmt":"2014-12-25T11:00:02","slug":"christmas-for-the-rmr-in-1914","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rmrmuseum.com\/fr\/christmas-for-the-rmr-in-1914\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas for the RMR in 1914"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Friday, December 25, 1914<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In Camp, Lark Hill, Salisbury Plains<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Battalion War Diarist wrote for this day:<em> \u201cDuty Battalion.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/?p=9817&amp;preview=true#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[1]<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10117\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/25-Dec-14.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10117 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/25-Dec-14-300x206.png\" alt=\"Canadians on Salisbury Plain receiving their Christmas cards\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Canadians on Salisbury Plain receiving their Christmas cards<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">THIS DAY IN RMR HISTORY:\u00a0Earlier in the month The Globe in Toronto had carried this report about postal service to the Canadian troops, both in England and on the continent:-<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSalisbury Plain, Eng., Nov 17.\u00a0 \u2013 The Canadian postal detachment with the contingent is planning the delivery of the mails at the front by aeroplane.\u00a0 It is hoped that the scheme may be tried here during the next few days.\u00a0 A Postman will ride with the aviator and the mail bags will be dropped near the various field post offices, where officials will be waiting to receive them.\u00a0 The aeroplane, of course, will go to within a few feet of the ground when the sacks are to be dropped.\u00a0 If the scheme works out satisfactorily here the letter mails received at Railway Head, in France,\u00a0 when the Canadians go to the continent, will be sent up to the front by means of aeroplanes.\u00a0 It is expected that delivery will be made much more rapidly than by the usual methods.<\/p>\n<p>Colonel Victor Williams, General Camps Commandant, has expressed himself as highly pleased with the postal service given to the Canadian contingent.\u00a0 Notwithstanding that the area covered by the Canadian camps is some twenty square miles in extent, two deliveries of mail are made daily from the base post office to each battalion and independent unit, while two despatches are also made to outlying points.\u00a0 Each of the five Canadian camps has a fully equipped field post office and a telegraph office.\u00a0 Hundreds of telegrams are received and delivered to the soldiers every day, while the amount of mail matter averages over one thousand parcels from London alone, and the number of letters handled daily ranges from twenty-five to thirty thousand.<\/p>\n<p>There is great joy in the camp when the news spreads that the mail has arrived from Canada.\u00a0 The Canadian mails come twice a week, and the men look forward anxiously to letters from home.\u00a0 Yesterday over 80,000 letters were received from Canada and all were sorted and distributed by the Canadian postal detachment under Lieut. K. A.
