{"id":10228,"date":"2014-12-08T14:29:04","date_gmt":"2014-12-08T19:29:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/?p=10228"},"modified":"2014-12-08T14:29:04","modified_gmt":"2014-12-08T19:29:04","slug":"23rd-cef-given-rousing-send-off-in-1914","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rmrmuseum.com\/fr\/23rd-cef-given-rousing-send-off-in-1914\/","title":{"rendered":"23rd CEF GIVEN ROUSING SEND OFF IN 1914"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Westmount Battalion Left For Quebec Yesterday en Route To The Front<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/09-Dec-14_B.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10230 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.royalmontrealregiment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/09-Dec-14_B.png\" alt=\"09 Dec 14_B\" width=\"254\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a>THIS DAY IN RMR HISTORY &#8211; Wednesday, December 9, 1914 &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>\u201cThe six hundred and forty men of the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> Westmount Battalion were given a hearty send-off when they left Montreal yesterday morning to go to Quebec, where they will join the half battalion already there, and complete their training before going to the front.<\/p>\n<p>The men marched from the Peel street barracks to Windsor station, and entrained there, leaving at ten o\u2019clock on a special train of fourteen cars.\u00a0 As the marched on Peel Street, crowds of citizens, including many relatives and friends, lined the street and at times cheered lustily, the soldiers presenting a fine appearance.\u00a0 In the crowds there were mothers, sisters, and sweethearts, and not all of them were successful in forcing back the tears.\u00a0 But the men presented a jaunty front, singing \u201cTipperary\u201d and patriotic songs as they swung along.<\/p>\n<p>At the head of the parade marched the Victoria Rifles band.\u00a0 Following it came Col. F.W. Fisher, commander of the battalion, and Col. E.W. Wilson, O.C. for Montreal division, Major W.B. Anderson, G.O.C., and Major L. Leduc, A.A.G. came next.\u00a0 At the corner of Osborne street, Col.
